For years, working as a sideperson with marvelous bandleaders and gifted composers, I wondered what my music would sound like when the moment was right to lead my own project. A dear friend and collaborator gave me some great advice: write the music you want to play, for the band you want to play it with. At the time, I was transcribing a lot of music by some of my (honorary) musical godfathers - Henry Threadgill, the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Eric Dolphy, Albert Ayler, Don Cherry, Ornette Coleman, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Sun Ra - and was getting deep into the spaces the musicians got into together when the "tune" they were playing was a distant memory. I started writing new compositions based on tiny fragments of their improvisations, brief moments of a drum solo or a bass figure, a piano voicing or a scrap of an idea from a horn solo, and the music on this record started to come into focus. Somehow instead of being confronted with blank staff paper, I was communing with all this collective musical energy by the artists who had inspired me most. The musicians I knew I had to play this stuff with happened to be a band already - Go-Go Fightmaster - and we'd all been playing together in different contexts for many years, but fortunately they indulged me, and have brought so much to this music, for which I am very grateful.
